Think Before You React

Your best employee just told you they’re leaving.

STOP! BREATHE!

The manner in which you respond in this moment will have a significant impact on how easy or difficult the next few weeks will be for you and your team.

You essentially have two choices:

1. Throw a Tantrum 2. Show Appreciation and Gratitude

If this employee’s mind is already made up, your focus should shift to “how can I make this person WANT to be as helpful as possible in this transition.”

Although option 1 might work on the slim percentage of people who are influenced by anger and aggressive guilt tactics, you’re likely going to do more harm than good.

Be gracious in this moment. Show appreciation for all that they’ve done and ask graciously (don’t demand) for any extra concessions that you’d appreciate (i.e. extended notice period).

You get more bees with honey than vinegar.
